“The aim is to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works.” - Moshe Feldenkrais, PhD Where in the past you may have experienced relief from pain or stiffness with massage, stretching or other muscle and joint techniques, at the Feldenkrais Studio our focus is on evaluating and optimizing patterns of movement, in order to distribute the effort of movement through the entire body and minimize strain and ‘wear and tear’ in certain areas. When you experience our classes and individual sessions you are engaging in a process of learning and change, leading to an improved way of functioning beyond the effects of a passive treatment session. When we move well, there is a quality of lightness and ease; muscles don’t work unnecessarily hard, and ‘wear and tear’ of the joints is minimal. We will help you to identify when you build up tension and strain in your life and to make the necessary changes towards lighter and easier movement. You will leave our sessions feeling more balanced and moving better. Individual Consultations Functional Integration is the name of the individual hands on bodywork of the Feldenkrais Method. You may come to see us because you have and area of pain, restriction or injury that is impacting on your everyday activities. We will explore how that is related to your movement habits and using gentle and precise touch facilitate easier, less restrictive ways of moving. This process of learning leads to improvement in the pertinent functions such as walking, singing, bending, swimming, running etc. For lasting changes, a series of lessons over time is usually recommended. Feldenkrais group classes In Awareness through Movement group lessons, students are actively learning about the habitual muscle tensions that may lead to restrictions, poor posture or injury. There are hundreds of lessons, each of which is carefully structured to release unwanted movement and postural habits, and teach more fluid, effortless and coordinated movement. Developing awareness of our movement is the key to modifying it, hence the name of the classes. At The Feldenkrais Studio, we run weekly group classes, which you are welcome to attend on a casual or term basis, as well as specialist workshops. How are Feldenkrais Practitioners trained? Feldenkrais practitioners complete an intensive professional training program over 4 years. The Australian Feldenkrais Guild (AFG) Inc. is their non-profit professional organisation, which liaises with other Feldenkrais Guilds worldwide. The AFG maintains the quality and integrity of the practice of the Feldenkrais Method in Australia. |
